In December 2021, Google announced the Product Review Update-this update impacting product review pages.
This update was introduced as a spam update in early November, and a core algorithm update that terminated in late November.
While some may argue it’s ill-timed for Google to apply algorithm updates during the engaged in shopping season, according to these updates have not been too troublemaking.
Google Search Central announced on a tweet in this update:
“Our December 2021 product reviews update is now rolling out for English-language pages. It will take about three weeks to complete.”
Kent clarified what kinds of sites will be affected by the December 2021 product review update:
“Mainly relevant to sites that post articles reviewing products. Think of sites like “best TVs under $200″.com. The goal is to improve the quality and usefulness of reviews we show users.”
Product Review Page Ranking Assessment
Google announced the recommendation to an “automated assessment” that is especially for product reviews. It also mentions that it applies to regular web pages so the product review pages are subject to the same ranking factors.
New Product Review Best Practices
The first google review update requires that the review page provide evidence that the product has been used by the person that is reviewing it. Low-quality reviews affect the site posting bogus. Many low-quality reviews are associated with sites posting bogus reviews that are closer to rewritten versions of the product statement.
And the other requirement is that product reviews offer multiple buying options.
So in the future, these two requirements can potentially become ranking factors. The new documentation, titled Write high-quality product reviews, lists the following recommendations to follow to obey Google’s guidelines.
